St. John's Receives Largest Gift in History

Da Vinci Surgical System Now Available at St. John's

ST. JOHN’S REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER IN OXNARD
RECEIVES LARGEST GIFT IN HOSPITAL’S HISTORY
$1,750,000 TO FUND NEW DA VINCI SI SURGICAL SYSTEM

Oxnard, Calif. (December 19, 2011) – St. John’s Regional Medical Center has received a $1,750,000 million grant, the largest single gift in the hospital’s history. The grant from a local foundation will fund the da Vinci Si Robotic Surgical System at the Oxnard hospital.

The newly refined da Vinci Si Surgical System is the most technologically advanced surgical platform available today. With enhanced visualization and the ability to control surgical tools at a console seated near the patient, it provides surgeons with ultra precise instrument movement and 3-D views of the surgical field.

Many complex surgical procedures can be performed with this highly flexible technology including those for lung cancer, prostate cancer, thoracic surgery, gynecological procedures, urology, general surgery and many more.

“The application of this technology in the treatment of lung cancer is a relatively new and tremendously advantageous approach,” said Dr. Bruce Toporoff, a cardiothoracic surgeon at St. John’s. “The potential to perform minimally invasive surgery to treat and cure lung cancer is phenomenal and will enhance St. John’s active lung cancer program.” Toporoff added, “We are already innovative in our cardiac surgery program and the use of robotics affords us new opportunities in the future.”

This minimally invasive robotic technology will benefit St. John’s patients in numerous ways, including shorter hospital stays, reduced blood loss and fewer blood transfusions, minimized side effects, faster recuperation and reduced post-operative pain, and smaller incisions that lessen the likelihood of infection.

“I am overwhelmed by this generous gift to St. John’s,” said Laurie Eberst, president and CEO for St. John’s Hospitals. “It demonstrates that our legacy is strong and that local philanthropic leaders recognize and support the innovative surgical procedures being performed at St. John’s by our highly skilled physicians.”

The da Vinci Surgical System is an extraordinary amplification and extension of the human surgeon’s hands-on capabilities. Every nuanced hand movement is translated by the da Vinci arms into perfectly fluid, highly precise, real-time movements and actions of the specially designed instruments.

“As a result of this generous gift, our patients will benefit from this advanced equipment by experiencing less post-op pain, shorter hospital stays and shorter healing time,” said David Edsall, St. John’s Healthcare Foundation board chair. “Our surgeons are so pleased to be part of this progressive organization.”
