A New Exciting Initiative
St. John's Latino League is a unique organization committed to making significant health advancements and improvements in the quality of health resources for our community and health programs serving the needs of the Latino population.
Today, we invite the members of the Latino community to play a key role in the development of a new organization determined to make a difference in the provision of healthcare for the underserved. This group will also encourage a greater understanding of the importance health education and health promotion can make for a diverse and culturally rich population. Analysis provided by Catholic Healthcare West (CHW, St. John's parent organization) suggests that there are huge barriers to healthcare access in our communities. Due to the increasing growth rate in Ventura County, community services are frequently unable to meet the demand. Using socio-demographic and hospital utilization data, the CHW study offers a review of disproportionate and un-met healthcare needs according to geographic areas, and that while community-based assistance programs continue to evolve, the disparity between the "haves" and the "have nots" is widening. New, creative and fiscally sound strategies are necessary to ensure that all individuals in Ventura County benefit from available health services. To help address these health issues, eight prominent physicians have agreed to lend their support to this new endeavor. Their significant commitments, coupled with those of the hospital and our community, open the door to the opportunity to make a dramatic difference in the delivery of healthcare.
The Needs
Statistics tell us that one in five people in California do not have access to safe, reliable health care. Thirty-eight percent of Latinos are medically uninsured, even though many work more than one job to support their families. There are numerous health care issues facing this significant Latino component of the community. With your help, St. John's would like to partner in finding solutions to these urgent matters. As a first step, St. John's has chosen to address the prevalence of diabetes in the Latino population and the opportunity to make positive changes in the provision of service and treatment related to this illness and devasting effects of its complications.
